MVP - Mike Murphy

This week’s MVP award goes to Mike Murphy of Naval Proxy.  For those who haven’t heard yet, Naval Proxy knocked off the only remaining undefeated team last week.  The following is an unsolicited MVP nomination from a non-captain:

I have to add a big shout out to Cap’n Mike. I thought maybe I shouldn’t say this because it took the team to win (sincerely) and there were lots of fabulous plays (Scotch was bleeding, Gwen nearly wrapped herself around the soccer goal, Cheri patiently explained how the “cup” is supposed to work, Joe running himself ragged getting open, Evan on a layout “D”), but…

When I was thinking back about the big plays in the game, I kept seeing Mike. At the end of the second game, he had two way-up-in-air “D’s” that saved it for us. And there were some others that weren’t quite as critical, like when he laid out his good friend, 61 year old Law Lamar. (Nothing gets in the way of Mike’s focus on winning. Poor Law.) And then there were the two throw-to-the-open-space-in-the-end-zone passes, the last of which was for the winning score.

So, go Mike! And I am submitting this as a renegade nomination for player of the week to Scottie….which, by the way Scottie, ought to get special attention because Navy Proxy is the team that beat the formerly undefeated and dominant team in the league last night.

Other players getting a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T:

Carrie Schlemmer from Li-Lick - Carrie played extremely well last night, and even brought some fans for her team along. Carrie made her presence on the field known by making fantastic up the line cuts. She also had a fantastic layout in the end zone for a score. Carrie was a force that the green team just couldn't reckon with.

Joel Anderson for his many stand-out defensive plays and solid handling skills.  Joel never caved to the intense pressure of trying to avoid a shut-out season for his team.  Instead he brought his A game yet again to week four, shutting down numerous throws to the other team in their end zone and calmly but proficiently working the disc back to score for Swine Blue, leading the team to its first victory!!!!!!

Eric Scolecas- no wonder this guy's known as Scotch!  While some may wonder if this is a reference to his ancestry or drink preferences, our team quickly learned this week that it is actually a name earned by his scotch tape-like grabs.  We thought we'd need an instant replay to verify the catch that Scotch made as he rolled on the ground to grab an impossible throw into the dirt, but then his victorious arm shot up with disc in hand, causing sighs, groans, and general incredulousness among our team.

Mackenzie Stagg - who caught a score over Will Lewis.

Wes Bullock  - The Chronic Master Bladers rallied and nearly came back to win when Wes showed up.

Kathleen Parks for putting it all out on the line. She helped score and defended with her whole body! Kathleen laid it all out there tonight!!

Anne Lynn - She ran hard and played well all around for Hella Yella.

Andrew Wash - A new player who, in his first time to play in the cup, intercepted the other team’s first throw of the point by busting a** to get down there after the pull.

Ben Pendergrass - for his general awesomeness.  Congratulations on the engagement!

Mac Braden - He made a couple huge layout bids for his team to keep them alive. His play, from some handling all the way out to deep was phenomenal.

Ryan Hoffman. His captains think he may be the best popper in summer league. If he wants the frisbee no one will stop him. He made big throws and big catches in each game. When his team started to struggle he kept them alive when they could have caved. He is one of the only reasons Li-Lick was able to go 2-0 in week 4.

Alex Taylor for the amazing catching the that helped them to beat the previously undefeated Muchos Grassyass on universal point.

Jimbo Tucker for just being GREAT! :)

Eric Skocelas was a scoring machine last night. He caught the winning score in a come from behind victory against Swine Blue in game 2 off a great cut, and made a stunning layout dive to keep a disc alive to allow us to score another crucial point late in that game. He always managed to get open against the zone defense in game 1 and against the man-to-man defense in game 2.

Week 3 MVP - Ryan Miller come on down!!

Week three’s MVP is Ryan Miller.  Ryan is a first year player making a major impact on the league-leading Muchos Grassyass.  His callahan last week stood out from the other great performances around the league.  What is a callahan you ask?  A callhan is when a player intercepts the disc in the opponent’s end zone for an automatic score.  Watch a video here (No, it’s not Ryan in the video but I’m imagining his was probably pretty awesome too).

Honorable Mentions:

Dan Chappell.  From Dan’s captain - Dan had an amazing night, really stepping it up in both games, but especially in game two when he inspired us all with a turnaround point in which he had a huge D, followed by a sprint down the field and sweet layout catch in the end zone for a score to tie the game.  From that point on, there was no stopping us... until the other team won.  :(

Mark Van Gerwen.  Though Mark would never nominate himself, his impact on last week’s game was abundantly clear.  Before Mark’s late arrival the Ugly Hucklings had been outscored 13-7 on the night.  Mark arrived early in the second game and entered with the score tied at 2 apiece.  He promptly made a game-changing mud-slinging layout D that sparked his team to a 9-5 run and the win.  When asked how he felt about turning his team’s fortunes around Mark sternly replied, “I just didn’t want to be outplayed by Christy.”

Nirmal "the Flash" Choradia for his lightning fast moves down the field, popping up exactly wherever the other team didn't want him to be, shutting down their poppers, intercepting their throws, and generally smoking all of their guys.  The other teams were impressed!!!

Brandon Bates. **Breaking News**  Actual quote from an opposing captain: “We'd actually like to nominate Brandon Bates for a night of exceptional plays and surprisingly good sportsmanship.  It helped make for an intense but enjoyable game.”....I promise I didn’t make that up.

Spencer Davis.  He stepped up and played above and beyond his usual standards.

Evan Thomas for his willingness to sacrifice his body including the use of his face to make a defensive play and then multiple layout catches for scores, including one to end the first game.

Andrew Butler.   From Andrew’s captain - He is always a solid player with great spirit, but tonight in our second game he outdid himself.  He made some phenomenal catches while being contacted by the opposing team.  He was knocked around and knocked down and still caught the disc.  He took an elbow or knee to the neck on one play.  Got up, shook it off and after taking a moment, completed a pass.  Turned right around on the next possession and made a huge "D" on the opponent's goal line as they were about to score.

Other players getting some love:

Jorge Pino, Dan Chappell, Stephen Rhea, Jimbo Tucker, Justin Thigpen, Mary Beth Brown, Ashley Brooks, Christy Dettmer, Richard Phillips, and Mary McWhirter.

MVP - What's better than ice cream?

What's better than getting ice cream?.....being MVP and getting ice cream from Dairy Queen!

That's right, each week beginning this week BUDA will be crowning a weekly MVP.  The MVP will enjoy all of the fame and glory that comes from being featured here on the BUDA blog as well as winning a Blizzard or other yummy dessert from Dairy Queen!!  (The Brownie Batter Blizzard is the Blizzard of the Month for those you who were wondering)

How to win:  Captains will send a short paragraph highlighting one player from their team or an opposing team or telling the story of something that happened during the games and why that player should be the week's MVP.  MVP's will be announced here on the blog and the best nominations will be posted each week.

If anyone takes pictures or videos before, during, or after the games, I can certainly post some of those here on the blog.  Pictures of anybody jumping over Jay Pigford and winning the disc are automatic MVP winners.

Special Shout-Out to Hesston (4-0) for providing the DQ gift cards.

See ya'll on the field,
Scottie

JPK Fields

A map to JPK fields has been posted on the right. Here are some written directions:

You take Exit 135 (Old Leeds Road) off I-20.
—If you're coming from Birmingham, you'd head toward Atlanta on I-20; Exit 135 is just before the I-459 junction. After you exit, at the end of the ramp, turn right. After about a block, turn right at the T road onto Old Leeds Road. Take the first right onto Appaloosa Drive (the road is a little hard to see, but it's right after the end of the guard rail; you'll see an electric substation in front of you after you turn). Follow Appaloosa Drive until it ends at the fields.
—If you're coming from Leeds or someplace south such as Shelby County, Exit 135 is the first exit after I-459 as you head west on I-20 toward Birmingham. At the end of the ramp, turn left and cross over the interstate. At the T road, turn right onto Old Leeds Road. Take the first right onto Appaloosa Drive (the road is a little hard to see, but it's right after the end of the guard rail; you'll see an electric substation in front of you after you turn). Follow Appaloosa Drive until it ends at the fields.
