Spin Ultimate

Some Atlanta guys started an ultimate gear/apparel company called Spin Ultimate. They emailed me asking to post some information about them on our site. First I told them I'd do it for a million dollars. Then I went to their site, and saw that they had a lot of good stuff. I liked it so much I even ordered some for the holidays. You should too.

EOS and Summer League Final Thoughts

Congratulations to Mustachio for winning the End of Season tournament! Mustachio took the final game, 6-3 over Grite to win the championship.

Though weather was apparently unfortunate, I think we can all agree that this year's tournaments were both successes.

Congratulations to Token for taking the Season Champions title!

Congrats to all teams for having an awesome, fun, successful summer league. Thank you all for your spirit and for making BUDA the great organization that it is.

A major thanks to Cory Casella for his work commissioning this year. Those will be hard shoes to fill next year! Thanks to all the BUDA officers and captains for their help and dedication. For everyone who volunteered, thanks for making this season run so smoothly. From finding fields to getting kegs, food, making schedules, drafting players, and setting up cones, every little bit helped.

Cheers to everyone, and stay tuned for information about Winter League. Look for sign-up notices in late October. And as always, open play will still carry on every Sunday at 2:00 PM.

Week 8 Standings

We have a new leader as of Week 8. Mustachio Pistachio comes from 3rd to bump off Brian's Fire in the Regular Season Standings. This is the first week that Brian's Fire has NOT been in first place.

Other notables:

Sweet Pink made a huge jump from last week putting themselves right outside of the top 8 teams.

Token has made it 8 straight games without a loss

Grite remains unbeaten since before the MidSummer Tournament.

Toxic Sushi finally claws its way out of last place.

Sparkle Motion snaps a multi-week losing streak

Orchid Orgasm wins both it's games in a week for the first time since Week 1.

The Red Rockets are by far the most stylish team in the league, sporting hats designed by yours truly. If you haven't seent them yet, I will make sure I turn mine backwards before we play your team. That way you can get a good look at it while you are chasing me to the disc.

Giang's own daughter betrayed he and Kirstin by cheering for the super stylish Sweet Pink team. And you guys were mad at me for picking that color out? Come on.

This week, the competition was stiff for MVP, but after hearing the story, this week's MVP has to go to Lauren Tong, slasher of familial ties and recoginizer of superior style. Originally brought to the field to cheer on her parents' team of Giang's Last Stand, little Lauren became enamored with the Sweet Pink Delicious jerseys and switched her alliance. Giang and Kirstin, unable to cope, ended up losing the game 11-4, and contributed to Sweet Pink's meteoric rise up the leaderboard from 12th to 9th place.

Congratulations Lauren. Something tells me you might not be invited to join your parents for EOS, so if you're reading this, follow your heart and never listen to what your parents tell you.

EDIT: due to a captain (DENNIS) submitting late MVP Votes, they were not included. Those not pictured: Austin Guthrie, Jimbo Tucker, and Kate Gaston.

EDIT 2: Due to my being an idiot, I forgot to submit my own teams MVP nominations: Sammy Raviv, Tyler Lewis and Jason Yearout

Week 7 Standings

Sorry for the delay. Week 7 standings...

Congrats to Chris Acree, Week 7's MVP!

Sorry for the delay:

Summer League Week 6 Standings AND a Correction

Due to a slight flub on my part, the Season Point Differentials were a little off for the Week 5 Standings. They have been corrected.

Also, in Week 6, I have gone into a little more depth with the analysis of teams, highlighting (read spoonfeeding) for you the teams with the best weekly offense, defense, and point differential, AS WELL AS the teams with the best seson offense, defense and point differentials.

As you can see, Brian's Fire took a slight hit, losing both games this week. they are still number 1, but Mustachio Pistachio is nipping at their heels.

At the bottom, Toxic Sushi commands the dredges of Summer League, capturing all three titles for WORST season point diff, points scored AND points scored against. Ouch.

At the bottom for the week, Sparkle Motion continues to slip down the leaderboard, with two more losses this week. I can just hear Paul Dorsey screaming "I just don't think you are dedicated to Sparkle Motion!" (Donnie Darko reference, for those of you who dont know)
In other news, The Red Rockets jumped 4 spots on the leaderboard with two wins this past week. Red Rockeeeeeeeetttsss!

MVP of the week: Brian Terrell

Honorable Mention: Nate Schmidt

Best Couple to both be voted for MVP in the same week: Cory and Megan

Now the best couple must be going on their date. Gotta shower!

MIDSUMMER MADNESS

Bienvenu BUDA,

The MidSummer Tournament went out with a bang this year! Congrats to Grite for taking the cake, beating Mustachio Pistachio 13-9.

Grite fought through the ranks, beating Toxic Sushi in the quarters and Brian's Fire in the semis. Mustachio dominated the Red Rockets and Giang's Last Stand to land in the final game.

In the final matchup, Jimbo Tucker made a monumental layout D, landing in bounds by the very skin of his toenails. A huge layout-D response was brought by Ben Pendergrass of Mustachio to steal some momentum from Grite. In the end, Grite took the game and reserved a spot as Mid-Summer Champions. Mustachio Pistachio reserves a spot for BEST TEAM NAME EVER.

Thanks to all who volunteered to help out with the weekend. Shout outs to:

  • Hoa for delivering the kegs to the fields!
  • Steve Millburg for supplying cones and helping with setup/take-down
  • Annie Mayhew for post-finals cleanup and lost-and-found management
  • Jay Pigford for organizing and fronting the money for your Saturday eats
  • Cory, Chris, Elizabeth, and Megan for waking up super early and helping set-up.
  • Paul, Brad, and everyone else at the camper for getting super drunk and supplying entertainment to the worker-bees.
  • Anonymous Pranksters for putting duct-tape on Cory's tires. I have a wonderful scrape on my knuckles which was well worth it for the opportunity to peel tar-covered tape from the tires on the side of the highway.
  • Gwen for taking excellent pictures! View them HERE (You'll need a Snapfish account)
  • EVERYONE in this organization for showing up, playing with spirit, and helping make this tournament a blast all around.

Note:

There are no games this Thursday due to July 4th weekend. Games commence next Thursday, July 10th.

Discs will be ready in 3 to 4 weeks.

Go to Sauce on the Side and look at my bombtastic t-shirts.

If you have other finals highlights you'd like mentioned in this post, you can email me at meroth3@gmail.com.

Week 4 Standings and MVP's

After week 4, Team 1 is still rolling, even with the absence of their superstar, Gray Lloyd. On the other end of the spectrum, every team in the league has recorded at least one win. The Red Rockeeeeeeeeeeets made a jump from dead last by winning both games last week.

Mustachio Pistachio is making a run towards the top with two very convincing wins in Week 4. They are the first team this season to record 22 "Points For" in one week.

Write ups to come later.

Week 4 was apparently an off-week for several of the captains in the league. We had very few submissions for MVP of the week. The most convincing write-up was for the MVP selection for Week 4, Jennifer Bryson. She had to be marked by a man on the Black team to keep her out of the endzone. She was apparently displeased by this, but it did earn her MVP for Week 4.

Mid-Summer Tournament!!!!

Summer Leaguers:

Saturday, June 28th is the Mid-Summer Tournament.

  • Games will be played in Talladega across the street from the Talladega Superspeedway.
  • Games begin at 9:00 A.M. sharp!
  • Captains meeting occurs at 8:30 A.M.
  • There will be three pool-play games, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals.
  • Beer and food will be provided in the afternoon, but bring plenty of water and snacks for the morning.

Let's all make a big effort not to leave trash on the sidelines as we move from field to field.

And may the best red team win!!! ;)

Jewelry at Summer League

Due to an unfortunate incident last night at open play, I am going to make it mandatory to remove all jewelry before playing Summer League games.

Last night, Chris Yearout suffered a nasty cut that lacerated some of his forearm muscle, required a trip to the hospital and eight stitches. The cut was thought to be caused by the ring of another player.

Please, to avoid future incidents, remove all your jewelry before games. Thank you for your understanding.

Week 3 results and MVP Nominations

Below are the results from Week 3 play. Dennis and Jessica Vincent are still rolling towards that undefeated season... Will any team be able to stop the Spike to Gray combination?

On the low end, there are still two teams that are 0-6, including my own. Will they be able to break out of the funk?

As some of you may know, this week I asked each captains to submit 3 MVP nominations for the week: one from each team they played and one from their own team. Below is the list of names submitted for Week 3. Congratulations to David Hilgemann, this week's MVP. He had a ridiculous layout Callahan on universe point to win the game for his team against Jeff Elliot and Lilla's "David HasselHUCK."

Stay tuned for next week and come back to the blog for more write-ups from week 3!

Folks,

If you forgot to sign up for summer league, this is your last chance.

Email Cory Casella at Ccasella3@gmail.com if you need to sign up late, and he will respond with a link where you can sign up late. You will need to sign up BY FRIDAY if you want to play. That means contacting Cory by Friday morning at the latest. If you miss this one...there's always church softball or bingo or kickball or shuffleboard or something. But not BUDA ultimate.

Ccasella3@gmail.com by Friday morning. Thank him for his patience. He has a broken hand, and is one-handedly emailing back all you stragglers with the password.

Thanks!

Brian Yamane

Brian Yamane was a regular open-player, winter-leaguer, and summer-leaguer. His fun-loving attitude and sense of humor added so much to the BUDA community. Brian passed away last week, and he will be missed dearly by all who shared the field with him.

A link to his obituary can be found here: http://obits.al.com/birmingham/DeathNotices.asp?Page=Notice&PersonID=108380990

From the BUDA listserv:

Jay Pigford: Brian was the guy who, on the pull, would run down the field yelling
"FIRE!!" much like William Wallace would have if he had played ultimate. It
definitely brought a smile to my face everytime, no matter how bad we were
getting beaten.....great guy who'll be missed.

Steve Millburg: Brian played summer and winter league the past year or
two. Most recently, he was on Karen Balliet and Will
Marble's purple team this past winter league. He was
a fun, energetic guy. I remember him yelling all the
way down the field on each pull.

If you have pictures or memories of Brian that you would like to have posted here, please comment below or email your photos to meroth3@gmail.com
