Sunday Open Play

This Sunday, instead of league play, come out to Shades Cahaba Elementary School at 2p.m. for some old-fashioned Open Play. I'm sure we'll all need to run off the turkey from today and the tailgating food from tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving! Spend some time with your family today and teach your grandparents some Frisbee.

11.22.09 Games Cancelled

From Steve:
"We're going to postpone today's games because of wet fields. I just checked them. George Ward Park is marginally playable (though water is standing on the infields and the fields are wetter than they were last weekend, when we did chew them up somewhat); West Homewood is not playable. With more rain forecast for later this afternoon, it seems best to postpone (and not jeopardize our ability to use those fields in the future. We'll make up today's games later; details to come.

We're off next week because of Thanksgiving. Our next Winter League games will be Dec. 6. I don't know right now whether we'll stick to the Dec. 6 schedule or play what would have been today's schedule on Dec. 6; we'll get an e-mail out to you later about that.

Sorry for the postponement."

Week Three Results

In week 3, the black team (now known as Eight Ball) is continuing their monumental run towards an undefeated season. Some have suggested that performance enhancing drugs are at work here and are requesting that mandatory drug screenings be administered before next Sunday's games. If such actions are deemed necessary, you will be notified by your captains.

Also, I have yet to receive any writeups or MVP nominations this week. If you would like your team's accomplishments to be acknowledged on this super-high traffic website be sure to send all your info in to Steve or LeaAnne.

Games for 11.15.09

This is just a reminder that all games are at George Ward park today. Tuesday's deluge has left West Homewood unplayable this week.

See EVERYONE at George Ward at 1:00!

Week Two Results

After two weeks there seems to be an amazing amount of parity in this league. With a virtual 5-way tie for second place and no team without a win, this could be anyone's season... if it weren't for the black team. Can Gray and the guys from Anniston be stopped or is every other team just going to lay down for them?

Captains: Did your team do anything amazing this week? Did you see the other team do anything noteworthy? Send in your highlights to let your accomplishments be known.

White:
"Matt Phipps from the White Team had a beautiful layout Callahan D. We had the Orange team trapped on the sideline and Matt followed his defender in and jumped to grab the disc, make the D, and land in the endzone for the score! "

Purple:
"Jennifer on Purple Reign dove into the endzone, into the mud to catch the score! Also, our ladies made the majority of the scores in both games this week."

Green:
"In our first game, patient and consistent handling from Andrea, Beth and Nate pretty much won it for us. But an amazing huck from Tom Culpepper to newcomer Jeremy McDermott certainly helped as well. In our second game (against black) all our scores were hard fought and deserved. Smart cutting in the endzone from Nick Rockwell and an incredible layout from Brian Zirbes for a score really helped keep our intensity up... until we lost."

Red:
Red and Light Blue's second game of the day was an out-and-out battle. Blue went up 8-3. Then Red rattled off 7 in a row. Eventually the game reached universe point. Both teams took shots in the endzone but couldn't pull it out. Finally, a solid D from Amanda McPhail right near Blue's endzone setup a quick pass for the score and the win.

Week One Results

One week in and there already appears to be some separation amongst the teams. Of course it is still very early in the season but three teams have set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. Is this going to be a sign of things to come or have the top three merely put a target on their backs?

Also, please check out the updated schedule for the latest information about fields and playing times.

Field Change for 11.1.09 Games

From Steve:

The West Homewood fields are too wet (if we play on them, we'll tear them up, which will jeopardize future field use). So today's games scheduled for West Homewood will be played at JPK Fields instead.

This affects teams 5 (Mike Murphy-Gwen Acree, captains), 6 (Jay Pigford-Lea Anne Williams), 7 (Jimbo Tucker-Stacey Brown), and 8 (Brian Loynachan-Ashley Brooks).

Here are directions to the JPK Fields (there's a soccer field and another field next to it; we'll use both of those, as the soccer field is too narrow for two fields to fit on it):

You take Exit 135 (Old Leeds Road) off I-20.
—If you're coming from Birmingham, you'd head toward Atlanta on I-20; Exit 135 is just before the I-459 junction. After you exit, at the end of the ramp, turn right. After about a block, turn right at the T intersection onto Old Leeds Road. Take the first right onto Appaloosa Drive (just after the end of the guard rail). Follow Appaloosa Drive until it ends at the fields.
—If you're coming from Leeds or someplace south such as Shelby County, Exit 135 is the first exit after I-459 as you head west on I-20 toward Birmingham. At the end of the ramp, turn left and cross over the interstate. At the T intersection, turn right onto Old Leeds Road. Take the first right onto Appaloosa Drive (just after the end of the guard rail). Follow Appaloosa Drive until it ends at the fields.

See you there.
