Winter League Registration + New Site

Well, it's time to say goodbye to Blogspot. The site as served us well the past few years, but we have grown as a community and it's time to move on. Thanks for the good times, Blogger.com. You will be missed...

To check out the new site (which features team pages of Birmingham's traveling teams, a separate league page for all of the important league info, a detailed map listing the playing fields and a brand new forum for all our trash talk, mvp discussions and spam) simply point your browser to www.mudbowl.org.

There is still a lot of work to be done, so be careful around all the wet paint. But hopefully it will be a better experience for us all.

ALSO, it is time to start Winter League! Registration is currently open, so get your credit cards ready because this year, if you don't pay at signup, you won't be registered.

Winter League Games Poll

Recently we have been discussing the possibility of moving our winter league games from Sunday afternoon to Thursday evening. Some have stated that this would be a more convenient time for them. Others have said that it may be too cold on Thursday nights in January. While still others have remained neutral and want to see the two opinionated parties have a fight to the death to determine the fate of us all.

In order to appease everyone, we've decided to do this democratically. If you feel strongly one way or the other, please vote in the poll in the right sidebar.

Actually, we're currently exploring all possibilities and other considerations (such as field availability) might affect when we play as well. However, please feel free to let your voice be heard.

The Final Countdown!

We're leaving together
But still it's farewell
And maybe we'll come back
To earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground
Will things ever be the same again?

It's the final countdown...
The final countdown!

Here are the brackets and schedule for the End of Summer Tourney. Get there on time! Bring water, sunscreen, and your A-game!

Blue-Tang Clan wins Mid-Summer Tourney

This past Saturday the Blue-Tang Clan rose from their relative obscurity of a 4-6 season to claim the title of Mid-Summer Champs.

Their day started in a pool with two teams that had previously defeated them, SPF-175 and Mean HO Green. Knowing that the only way to the bracket was to win every game, Blue-Tang took early leads in their pool play games but allowed each opponent to come back and reach universal game point. For three consecutive games they maintained their composure and finished off the opposition by the slimmest of margins.

In the semis, Blue-Tang faced Chilipeno for the first time this season. Being forewarned about the Oaks-to-Oaks connection, the blue team played aggressive defense and managed to win their first game of the day by more than one point.

The finals pitted them against Mike Murphy's Huckamole. By this time the sun was out and it was HOT. Both teams used their share of timeouts and tried their best to play smart, conservative Ultimate. Huckamole took an early lead and maintained it all the way to a 10-7 game point. However, Blue-Tang miraculously managed to get two breaks back and tie it at 10-10. Needing to win by two, the game went into overtime. After a little back and forth, Blue-Tang took their first lead of the game at 12-11. Then, thanks to a big D by Wes Bullock, the blue team marched it down the field decisively for the score; Blue-Tang Clan over Huckamole 13-11.

The most noteworthy performances of the day have to go to Blue-Tang's three women. They played a short rotation through 5 games in some of the hottest conditions Talladega has to offer.

Congrats Blue-Tang Clan.

Summer League Teams

The results of the draft are finally available! If your captains haven't contacted you yet or if you are just anxious to see the other chumps that you'll be facing up against, check out the complete summer league teams list.

The full schedule should be posted shortly. In the meantime, I'll leave you with this thought from Chris "I'm on a horse" Acree:

"Hello captains, look at your draft choices, now look at me, now back to your choices, now back to ME. Sadly, they are NOT me. Look down, back up, where are you? You're handling on the field, wishing your popper could pop like me. What's in your hand? Back at me, I have it, it's that sweet hammer you just threw. Look again, I'm in the endzone. Anything is possible when you draft someone like me. I'm on a horse."

Summer League Logo Needed

From Steve via the BUDA email list:

"Design the BUDA Summer League shirts and discs--and win a fabulous prize!

We need a logo for both shirts and discs (one design or two related designs). Hundreds of people will be wearing your designer outfits (by which I mean "T-shirts"). You'll be famous(ish)!

If you win, you'll get to play Summer League for free. And maybe I'll bake some cookies for you or something.

Please submit your design(s) to Lea Anne Williams:
LeaAnne_Williams@timeinc.com

Deadline is April 26 (which will also be the beginning of Summer League signup).

I'm looking forward to having your very own design close to my heart."

TANG IT!!
Winter League Champions!

Cold. Wet. Muddy. Those three words pretty much sum up our saturday at EOW. But one team didn't care about any of that as they rose to the top winning five straight games to clinch the Winter League Title. Eight Ballin' and Arm & Hammer held seed and rose out of Pool A while Tang IT and Cap'n Murph's Wenches took the 1 and 2 seeds out of Pool A.

After a bit of pizza and a pbr refresher, Tang It faced off with Arm&Hammer in the semis on Field One. Tang It got to an early lead but A&H would bring it back close until Tang took half. Tang stuck to their zone defense and it paid off in the second half forcing turnovers on impatient throws while Tang steadily worked it down the field. Tang finished off Arm in a capped game to advance to the finals. On Field Two Eight Ballin' had its way with Cap'n Murph's Wenches 13-6.

A pregame ceremony of sorts honored Steve Millburg who has exemplified the BUDA leadership principles (or rather far exceeded them!). BUDA presented Steve with a gift certificate to Bottega for his efforts over the years in furthering BUDA's civic involvement and forming strong bonds with various parks and rec organizations solidifying BUDA's network of supporters in the community.

Finals pitted number one seed Eight Ballin', captained by Brian Loynachan and Ashley Brooks, and number two seed Tang It, captained by Lea Anne Williams and Jay Pigford, in a game that would have been played a week earlier had the rain not canceled the last week of the regular season. Early on 8Ball took control taking a 3-1 lead. Tang brought it back close before 8Ball scored three in a row to take half 7-5. Tang was playing zone while 8Ball used their speed and matched up in man defense. The Tang cup had trouble containing the disc and it repeatedly cut through the cup and then quickly up field for score after score. Having made many comeback runs during the season to win games, Tang was no stranger to this zip code. The pep talk paid off as Tang came out to tie up the game 7-7. Tang then took the lead 8-7 as their zone tightened up and got the turns. 8Ball took care of business on the next point and then got two breaks making it 10-8. Tang returned the favor as they began to figure out the cup D - shutting down the dump passes forced errant throws upfield. Score 10-10. The next few points are blurry as the kegs got lighter and the end got nearer. Next thing everyone knew the score was knotted at 12's win by two hard to 15. Tang calls a timeout to have a rest before the last push. They talk it over in the huddle what to do on D and the decision is made to keep the disc out of Gray's hands at all costs, even on the dump. Force 8Ball to throw it up field and into the wing defenders. Tang received and worked it down to score to make it 13-12. On the ensuing point Tang set its zone cup very tight making every swing and dump pass very difficult. The wings began to pinch in to the middle anticipating the up the gut throw and sure enough Lea Anne slaps down a D in the middle giving Tang a chance to win the game from 20 yards out. An errant throw to the endzone leaves the disc in 8Ball's hands again, but again the Tang cup clamped down on the handlers, this time on their own goal-line. As the dump is denied again and again the count gets high and a desperation dump floats helplessly to the mud for a turnover. Tang it walks the disc to the goal-line and Jesse Touchstone makes a slashing cut to the corner for the winning score. Tang It wins 14-12!!

Great game by all. Great spirit.

Get ready for mudbowl and summer league coming soon.......

BUDA - Volunteer of the Year

Last Thursday, Cahaba River Society presented BUDA with their
Volunteer of the Year Award for creating the Huckraiser Tournament!
Jay Pigford, Beth Sheets, and Brad Sparks attended the CRS Annual
Meeting and accepted the award.

The Huckraiser raised money to support the Shane Hulsey CLEAN
Environmental Education Program. CLEAN (Children Linking with the
Environment Across the Nation) is an innovative program offering
students hands-on environmental education activities while safely
participating in a canoe trip or stream walk in the Cahaba River
watershed. The Cahaba River Society has compiled an interdisciplinary
field and classroom curriculum tailored to local water resources to
encourage critical thinking among students to help them make informed
decisions about water resource issues.

The Huckraiser also introduced the ultimate community to the Cahaba
River Society's mission to protect and restore the Cahaba River, which
supplies half of Birmingham residents with clean drinking water. To
learn more about CRS, please visit their website. www.
cahabariversociety.org

BUDA has tentatively planned the next Huckrasier Tournament for this
October. Plan to come out and have fun while supporting the work
Cahaba River Society is doing for one of the nation's most
biologically diverse rivers!

01.03.10 Results

Here's the latest results from the commish. With 4 weeks till the End of Winter tourney I suppose it is technically still anyone's season. Be sure to check out the team highlights below and post your own in the comments.

Tang It!:
"TangIt! Might rename their team The Comeback Kids....

Our game two vs Murph’s wenches proved that once again, we prefer to be down in the cap. The game saw a couple of plays – one incredible. Midway through the first half TangIt worked it down the field within about 30 yards of the endzone. A Touchstone shot to the endzone slipped through a few folks before it bounced off Carolyn knocking her 90 lb frame to the ground. Just before the disc hit the ground she snapped it up with her ankles for the score.

In the second half TangIt is down 8-7 with the cap on. We work it down to the goal-line only to call a timeout – a turnover in the cap. After some strong D we get the disc back and score to make it 8-8. Game point sees an errant huck by their team in the endzone. Will swings the disc to LeaAnne, who snatches a close one away from the defender. We get the disc to an open Jesse cutting up the line who immediately swings it to his brother Green in the middle of the field who in turn sends a flick huck to the endzone to yours truly for the winning score. Jesse tries to get the team to dogpile me, but thankfully no one is willing.....except him."

The Incredible Huck!:
"It was cold and windy at West Homewood. Our zone D solidified pretty well this week and virtually every player on our team was credited for at least one forced turnover. Our smart and methodical rhythm doesn't highlight hucks as much sharp cuts and control. Veteran wisdom from Brad, Scott, and Joel definitely helped us keep our first game competitive and secured our win in a revenge game against Purple Reign."

Arm & Hammer:
"On a very wintery day at George Ward, a miraculous comeback of the ages occurred. The White Team (Arm & Hammer) was losing in dramatic fashion to the Red Team (Red Rover) 5 - 10. White Team members kept telling each other "don't give up". Even with game point for the Red Team looking us in the face, we told each other that it was not impossible to come back and win. With each pull, Arm & Hammer forced turnovers or got the D and scored point by point. Chipping away at the 5 - 10 deficit, it was soon 10 all! It was agreed to win by 2 or race to 13. Arm & Hammer stuffed and scored 2 more points to win 12 - 10. It doesn't get much more exciting than that. Way to go Arm & Hammer!"

Jan 3 Winter League Field Locations

The following is from Steve:

"The tentative locations are correct; we'll be at West Homewood and George Ward parks. I'm sorry for the late notice; the George Ward Park guy finally got back to me today about whether we could play there.

At West Homewood, we'll be on the soccer field at the very end of the park road (not the softball/baseball fields). We'll be on the soccer field for the rest of the season. One note: The restrooms won't be open until 3 p.m. For the rest of the season, they should be open at 1, but there's some New Year's weekend staffing issue this weekend.

At George Ward, we've been playing on Fields 1 and 2. Check with the park staffer (usually, it's a guy named Mike) if you want to play on another field instead.

Happy new year, everyone."
